10,000 Steps to a Healthier Holiday: Staying Active with CrossFit Tundra (Even When It’s Freezing!)

Let’s be real, Grand Forks in December isn’t exactly known for its balmy weather. ❄️ With snow piling up and temperatures plummeting, it’s tempting to hibernate indoors and embrace the cozy vibes. But staying active during the holidays is important for your overall health and well-being.

Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting you brave a blizzard in shorts and a t-shirt. Here’s your guide to hitting that 10,000-step goal, even when it’s frosty outside:

1. Embrace the Indoors

  • Mall Walking: Escape the cold and get your steps in at the Columbia Mall/Scheels. It’s a great way to get some exercise while also checking off your holiday shopping list.
  • Tundra Treadmill Time: Show up early or stay after class to get some extra steps in on our Assault AirRunners. You’ll get your heart rate up and build endurance in a comfortable, climate-controlled environment.
  • Stair Climbing: Skip the elevator and take the stairs whenever possible. Those extra steps add up!

2. Bundle Up and Brave the Outdoors (Sometimes)

  • Winter Wonderland Walks: Bundle up in your warmest gear and enjoy a brisk walk around your neighborhood or a local park. The fresh air and snowy scenery can be invigorating.
  • Snowshoeing or Cross-Country Skiing: Embrace the winter wonderland with some snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at Lincoln Park or Turtle River State Park.
  • Ice Skating: Lace up your skates. It’s a fun way to get some exercise and enjoy the winter season.

3. Make it a Social Affair

  • Holiday Shopping Spree: Turn your holiday shopping into a social outing with friends or family. You’ll get your steps in while also enjoying some quality time together.
  • Family Fun: Plan active outings with your loved ones, like ice skating, sledding, or building a snowman.
  • Dog Walking: If you have a furry friend, bundle them up and head out for a winter walk. They’ll appreciate the exercise, and so will you!

4. Track Your Steps and Stay Accountable

  • Use a Fitness Tracker: A fitness tracker or smartwatch can help you monitor your daily steps and stay motivated.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Start with a manageable goal and gradually increase it over time.
  • Find an Accountability Buddy: Partner up with a friend or family member to keep each other motivated and on track. Even better, grab a CrossFit Tundra buddy and tackle those 10,000 steps together!

Remember: Every step counts! Even small bursts of activity throughout the day can add up to significant health benefits. So, get moving this holiday season and enjoy a healthier, happier you.
